Introduction
I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) and an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering at University of Washington.
My research group focuses on understanding, designing, and developing technologies that encourage people to communicate and interact in ways that are self- and welfare-improving. We extend and build on theories from a number of fields, including psychology, communication and economics. Our application areas include behavior change, online support and Q&A, and civic and local participation.
I was previously faculty at Michigan State University with a joint appointment in Communication and Media and Information. I received my PhD in Human-Computer Interaction from the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University.
My research has been supported by National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Fulbright, Nokia, Intel, UW ALACRITY Center, and Institute of Translational Health Sciences.
I have been an academic consultant on the Incentives Advisory Board at Twitter, and the Advisory Board at Rulai.

Research Methods I (Quantitative)
Introduces experimental, quasi-experimental, and related research methods in human centered design and engineering. Examines the relationship between theory and research, hypothesis testing, experimental designs, modes of observation, sampling, validity, and data analysis and interpretation. Students undertake a research project. Prerequisite: Introductory statistics course.
HCDE 536 (Spring)
Interaction Design and Prototyping
An interface provides the framework, elements, and resources for a “conversation” to take place between people and products. An interface should provide an expectation of what a product can do and how a person can appropriately engage a product in order to take action. This class, you will study and design interfaces, through user-centered design processes.
