Ammonia oxidation in a microreactor

Here's a diagram of a microreactor that's been used for ammonia oxidation studies. A four inch diameter silicon wafer was used to prepare twelve of these T-shaped reactors. Ammonia and oxygen were added to the upper left and upper right ends of the reactor and the product stream exited out the bottom end and into a mass spectrometer.

The authors estimate that one thousand of these microreactors could produce about ten kilograms nitric oxide per day. They speculate that a redesigned reactor with catalyst on more than just one of the reaction zone walls will dramatically increase throughput.
