Ammonia oxidation is commonly used for the commercial production of nitric acid. It also constitutes and important step in the production of nitrogen bearing compounds commonly used for agricultural chemicals and monomers.
It should be noted that this reaction is also carried out in the presence of a Pt catalyst. In this case, the catalyst is deposited on the channel side of the membrane. Experiments show that small quantities of N2O is produced in addition to N2 and NO, while conventional reactors operating at the same inlet composition show only NO and N2 as the main products.
