A polyethylene plant
Once the natural gas has been separated from the oil, the gas is taken to a polyethylene plant, where ethane is converted into ethylene and then finally into polyethylene. But first, the ethane must be purified.
Natural gas contains methane, ethane, butane, and many other components. Polyethylene, however, is made from just ethane. Somehow, the ethane must first be separated from the other components. This separation is acchieved by using a distillation column.
