POLYETHYLENE...FROM THE BEGINNING

page2.html

During World War II polyethylene was only used as a specialty plastic in the military, as a coating for wires. High production costs made it much too expensive for any other practical use.

Now polyethylene is used in millions of ways, including such things as the household trash bag. What improvements have been made to the process of manufacturing polyethylene to make it so cheap and easily available?

Plastic bags are made from polyethylene

Engineers and scientists have radically changed the process of making polyethylene since World War II. The process used today has significantly reduced the production cost of polyethylene. This reduced cost has opened up the market for polyethylene to be used in a wide variety of products.

Our hope is to lead you through the process of polyethylene production, so that you may understand the complexity of making something as simple as the bags you use to throw out your trash.
