The outline shown below has four main sections with primary headings, and four sub-parts to each main section. The following activities ask you to write sample connecting devices based on the information in this outline.
(1) Write a preview of the outline as you would in the introduction of a document. Include the four main sections (e.g., "components of the communication model") but not their sub-points, in the preview.
(2) Write a transition between all of the sub-points under each heading: sub-points I and II, sub-points II and III, and sub-points III & IV. You should write 12 transitions in all (three for each section). For example: "While the role of the sender is important in effective communication, the role of the receiver is also vital for mutual understanding."
(3) Write an internal summary between each of the main sections of the outline in which you summarize the sub-points contained in each section. For example, you should write an internal summary of "components of the communication model" (first main section) that serves as a transition to "types of communication barriers" (second main section). You should write three internal summaries in all (between sections one and two, sections two and three, and sections three and four).
(4) Write a sample paragraph for two of the main sections of the outline, and use signposts to highlight each of the four points. You can make up information about the sub-points if you need to. You should include four signposts in each paragraph. For example, "The first component of the communication model is the sender."
Section One: "Components of the Communication Model"
Section Two: "Types of Communication Barriers"
Section Three: "Ways to Improve Communication"
Section Four: "Types of Communication"
