This session presents the recent trends in query expansion and discusses examples of the different approaches used. A brief tutorial introduction defines query expansion and provides the necessary background information about the process. Then, knowledge-based approaches to query expansion, applications of neural networks to query expansion, and the application of automatic query expansion in the OKAPI retrieval system are presented in some detail.
