Service Learning & K-12 Outreach I incorporate service learning in my upper level undergraduate courses at FHL. Partnering with FHL’s K-12 Science Outreach Program and Friday Harbor Middle School teachers Marine Botany students spend parts of several days mentoring 6th graders in their exploration of marine biodiversity, a subject the FHL students study in considerable detail all quarter. This assignment with all participants; teachers appreciate the added expert help, middle schoolers make personal connections with university students, and the FHL students reinforce their own learning by sharing their new knowledge with younger students, and it is fun! As part of the new Marine Biology Quarter offerings in Autumn 2009, FHL Marine Environmental Research students work with 1st graders at Friday Harbor Elementary School. |
