Please register
Everyone is welcome to this class, but students please register.
If you do not wish, or are unable, to register for credit, you may register for Audit. But please do register officially, even for Audit -- we need to show the numbers in this newly developing class.

Exams and grading
1) This is a graded class.
2) There will be homework. We will discuss homeworks in class, as well as there being some homeworks graded. Your homework grade will be based both on submitted homeworks, and on class homework presentations. It will account for 30% of your grade.
3) There will be a project. It will account for 35% of your grade. It could involve developing notes for some topic in the class, or a computing exercise, or it could involve doing an actual project. It will be due some time a week or so before Thanksgiving, probably. Students registered for credit, let me know if you have any ideas what you want to do.
4) There will be a final exam-- it will count for 35% of your grade. It will be an open-book exam. It is currently expected that it will be an in-class exam at the UW official time and place.

Office hours
See me after class, for brief questions, or to make an appointment if a longer time is needed. If more office hours are needed, I will set an official time.

Course texts
Useful books include:

Another book which contains some basic stuff, and a large glossary is If anyone manages to find this paperback, please let me know. I saw it in the summer, and it seems not bad at a brief glance, but no gurantees.
