A Reply from the XTM people on Windows 3.0 installation (December 11, 2003): Colour will not work because on the MCGA display Windows will choose a 640 pixel wide monochrome mode, rather than a 320 pixel wide colour mode. We have not tried very hard to see if it is possible to change this behaviour, so we have no suggestion to make - we suspect it can't be changed. In the olden days of Windows 3.0 the mouse driver was built-in to the operating system and could not use a plug-in third party mouse driver, so it ignores our driver and tries to use the hardware directly - which of course doesn't work the way it expects. One thing we tried, and you must NOT try, was plugging a serial mouse into the RS232 port. Since the serial mouse draws power from the RS232 port, it pulls a LOT of current from the plug, and we burned out the serial port on a Psion playing with it... :-( The good news is, it actually worked, right up to the bit where it burned out! Without a mouse, Windows 3.0 is not useful, which is why we didn't bother trying to improve the screen modes. Sorry to disappoint, but without full VGA and a better mouse, Windows on XTM is no more than a neat party trick. NB Info Support Team
