Graduate students Kathleen Weighandt, Geoffrey Leonard (Berg Group) and Monica Ospinal spearheaded the colloid's group Open House activity called "Walk on Water". Three hundred pounds of cornstarch were mixed with water (about 1-1.5 parts starch to 1 part water) to create a shear thickening viscoelastic fluid (Oobleck). This was a lot of work since the starch had to be hand mixed to the right consistency. The activity was a success and hundreds of kids and adults learned about viscoelasticity in a fun way.
