``I used to run 10 miles a day.
Until Luther made me
realize
that the only reason someone runs is, like,
if they are being
chased.''
I am Luther Glibb and I ask you:
what sort of muscles does running lead to?
I'll tell you. The very muscles which would cause a man to want to chase
a woman in the first place! Don't you see? Evolution has selected
for it. For thousands of years men chased woman to mate with;
so naturally the women
who ran the best, gave the best sport,
these bodies (and so yes the genes they carried)
would end up being the ones the male animal's visual system
would find most attractive. It's almost circular. It's hopelessly
Darwinian!
And the excercises of today's libertine society only strive to recapitulate
those dark days on the savanna. The modern gym
has been carefully designed to
increase our chances of eliciting libidinal urges in others.
You women riding your stair-masters, I'm talking to you!
Men doing your push-ups, can't you see what prowess you
are practising for?
``You tell'em, Luther!''
But does this mean we can't exercise at all?
Of course not.
