 SKIN CANCER SURGERY OVERVIEW

There are three major kinds of skin cancer: Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC), Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) and Melanoma. All of these have sun exposure as their major risk factor Once a skin cancer is diagnosed, treatment depends on multiple considerations including the type of cancer, and its location. Surgical removal of the primary cancer is the treatment of choice in many situations. Surgical removal may be done in several ways, again depending on the type of cancer and other factors. Skin cancer surgery includes several techniques including excision, Mohs Micrographic Surgery, and electrodesication and curettage. At the University of Washington Dermatologic Surgery Center, we will discuss with you the treatment options, risks and benefits depending on your individual case.

Don't forget that early detection is the best way to a cure. It is a simple routine to inspect your body for any skin changes. The skin cancers can be readily detected. If any growth, moles, sore, or discoloration appears suddenly or begins to change, see your dermatologist.
