| The University of Washington
School of Medicine's mission statement reflects the Center of Excellence
philosophy that more health care professionals are needed to serve our
underserved communities in the WWAMI region. The COE is committed to recruit
interested American Indian/Alaskan Natives (AI/AN) students to our medical
school with the hopes of providing them the necessary training to provide
quality health care to all of our tribal communities.
Over the years, the national
trend of the AI/AN applicant pool has been decreasing - especially our
male applicants. Likewise, the trend for the students applying to the University
of Washington has also declined over the years. However, for the first
time in years, there was a slight increase in the applicant pool in 2004.
