Annual Multicultural Alumni-Student Awards Reception
"Celebrating Diversity, Legacy and
Leadership"
Dr. Bessie Young-Mielcarek was honored at
the 14th Annual Multicultural Alumni-Student Awards reception held on
April 12, 2007
at the University of Washington School of Medicine. The event was
sponsored by the UW Medicine Alumni Association, the UW School of
Medicine Office of Multicultural Affairs, and MEDEX Northwest
Physicians Assistant Program. Dr. Young-Mielcarek received the Charlie
Garcia
Distinguished Service Award for her support and service to the OMCA and
the minority students. Dr. Young
is a nephrologist at the
VA hospital
and an assistant professor of medicine in the University
of Washington’s
Division of General Internal Medicine. Dr.
Young has long been committed to promoting diversity within the School of Medicine
as the founder and former chair of the African-American Mentor Network,
and as
a member of the School of Medicine’s Diversity
Advisory Board and its Cultural Competency Theme Committee.
Welcome
New AAMN Members!
We like to welcome several
new members to our network:
Dionne Piggott is a 4th year resident in Obstetrics & Gynecology at
UW
Medicine; there are three first year Surgery residents, Damien Carter,
Erica
Shelton and Marcel Tafen, all at UW Medicine. We also welcome three
Pediatrics
residents, Shaquita L. Bell, Hiwot Hiruy and Yolanda Evans all at
Children’s
Hospital & Regional Medical Center; and Teran Colen is a second
year
resident at UW Medicine in Radiology.-MW
