Openings

As of May 27, 2015, I am seeking one or two UW-Bothell students to help with each of the projects listed below, starting in the summer or fall. No funding is available for this work, but students will register for BBio 498 (independent study) to receive academic credit (2-4 credits per quarter, depending on expected workload). Interested students should email a letter of interest and a transcript (an unofficial one is fine) to crowther@uw.edu as soon as possible.

PROJECT #1: Do faculty cite their sources properly?

In teaching undergraduates, instructors present proper attribution as a pillar of scholarly integrity. But do these instructors practice the attribution policies that they preach? In particular, how consistently do they acknowledge the sources of images in their teaching slides? In this study we will quantify the extent to which faculty model appropriate attribution practices for their students. The study will have 3 parts. First, we will conduct a brief review of relevant literature; second, we will download publicly available teaching slides from the web and rate them for attribution compliance; and third, we will administer a brief web-based survey on possible reasons for noncompliance.

PROJECT #2: Is there educational value in content-rich STEM songs?

After becoming acquainted with relevant literature, students will work on an existing resource for teachers and students -- the "Sing About Science" database of educational songs -- and will collect and/or analyze data addressing the question of what traits make a song more or less helpful to students.
