Corey
Phelps is an Assistant Professor and Neal & Jan Dempsey Faculty
Fellow in the Management and Organization
Department at the Foster School of Business, University of Washington. He
completed his Ph.D. in Strategic Management at the Stern School of
Business, New York University. Dr. Phelps’s current research
focuses on understanding how companies use strategic alliances,
mergers and acquisitions, and minority equity investments in
start-up firms to enhance their performance. He was awarded a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation (SES-0521839)
to study
alliances and acquisitions. His published
research has appeared in Management Science, Strategic Management Journal, Academy
of Management Journal, and Advances in Strategic Management.
He is a past member of the editorial board of the Academy of
Management Journal and a recipient of the Academy of Management
Technology and Innovation Management Division’s Best Dissertation
Award and The State Farm Companies Foundation Dissertation Award. He teaches
courses in strategic management in the undergraduate, MBA, PhD, and
executive education programs at UW. Professor Phelps was recently
awarded the Wells Fargo Undergraduate Teaching Award by the Foster
School of Business and was a finalist (1 of 20) for the University
of Washington's Distinguished Teaching Award in 2008.
His
other teaching awards include the Undergraduate Professor of the
Year for Core Courses and numerous "Professor of the Quarter"
awards.
Before beginning his Ph.D. studies, Professor Phelps
worked as an internal consultant with AT&T Global Information
Solutions in their Industry Consulting Group.
He has also been involved in the founding of three small
businesses.
