Communications (or - when do I need to call you during the case)
During the course of the anesthetic, you are expected to call your attending for induction of anesthesia, emergence, and for any critical events. That is the usual explanation - but what does that mean?
Induction is obvious. "The Rules" dictate that I must be present during the induction of anesthesia.
Emergence: When you are getting close to the time of emergence, you should let me know. This way we can be sure we have the same emergence plan. I will make every attempt to be present for emergence, but in certain circumstances if there are no concerns for airway or stability, I may ask you to proceed without me. If you are uncomfortable with this, let me know and I will get there as soon as possible or make arrangements for another attending to be there.
