Support Person in Delivery Room during Cesarean Delivery

In most cases, it is best to have the support person come back to the DR (Delivery Room) after the regional block has been placed and determined to be functioning appropriately.

All anesthesia attendings agree that there should only be one support person in the delivery room with the patient. An interpreter may also be present if this is necessary.

In the event of medical problems or the need to induce a general anesthetic, the support person will be asked to leave the DR. The circulating nurse should escort the person out of the DR. The anesthesia staff will not be responsible for the safety and well-being of the support person.

Videotaping is not allowed during cesarean sections or during anesthetic procedures.

No support person in DR for other obstetric procedures, e.g. tubal ligation, cerclage, extraction of retained placenta.
