Abstract for Lab#5

In this lab you will study various aspects of thermochemistry with the aid of a calorimeter. Your first task will be to calibrate the calorimeter's temperature sensor, a thermistor. Next, you will measure the heat capacity of the calorimeter using the known heat input from a resistor. Then you will perform four experiments that will illustrate how calorimeters are used: (a) measurement of the heat capacity of a metal, (b) measurement of the enthalpy of a phase transition and (c) the heat of solution of two salts, and (d) the heat of neutralization of a strong and weak acid with a strong base.
