Abstract for SimLab#1 - Introduction to Excel and Data Analysis

In this lab you will learn the basics of Excel spreadsheets. Specifically, you will learn how to perform calculations and display your results as tables and graphs. You will then use Excel to make some statistical calculations on a data set which consists of repetitive measurements. You will learn how to summarize the data by calculating the mean and standard deviation and plotting your data as a histogram.

To prepare for this lab, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the Excel manual (available at the computer lab help desk in Suzallo Library) and you read Appendix A (Scientific Notation and Experimental Error) of your text book.

You will also find it useful to review Boyle's law in Chapter 4 of your textbook, pp. 103 -105.

If you have purchased the supplementary Excel manual by Gottfried, you should read Chapters 2, 3 and 4. It is suggested that you go over this material while sitting at your computer with Excel opened. Thus you can immediately confirm your understanding of the material by duplication on a live spreadsheet.
