In the first part of this lecture we show how the periodic table provides a succinct organizational framework for the elements and their properties. We will organize our data concerning the physical and chemical properties into a scientific database on a spreadsheet. We will then explore the database to show the recurring patterns in properties and behaviors of the of the elements.
In the second part of this lecture we will discuss the law of conservation of energy as it applies to chemical systems.
To prepare for this lecture, we suggest that you read sections 1-5 and 1-7 of Oxtoby.
