Abstract for Lecture #21 - (a) Thermochemistry and (b) Reversible Processes in Ideal Gases

In the first part of this lecture we use the linear additivity of the DHs of reactions to predict enthlapies of unknown reactions. Particular emphasis is placed on the concept of the standard enthalpy of formation of a compound. These are available in Appendix D of Oxtoby.

In the second part of this lecture we derive expressions for the variation of the state variables and q and w for isothermal and adiabatic processes on ideal gases.

To prepare for this lecture, we suggest that you read section 7-5 and 7-6 of Oxtoby.
