Abstract for Lecture #18 - Mixtures and Distillation

In the first part of this lecture we will describe ideal solutions and their resulting vapor pressure. We will use Raolt's law to calculate the vapor pressure from each component and then use Dalton's law to obtain the total pressure. Then we will calculate the pressure-composition for the system.

In the second part of this lecture we will use the Clausius-Clapeyron equation to construct a temperature-composition diagram for the system. This diagram is used to describe the process of distillation.

To prepare for this lecture, we suggest that you read sections 5-4, 6-4 and 6-5 of Oxtoby.
