In the first part of this lecture we discuss the how and why of phase transitions.
In the second part of this lecture, we will discuss phase diagrams and how they can be used to predict the behavior of a substance as a function of temperature and pressure. The phase diagram of CO2 is constructed on a spreadsheet and the behavior of CO2 rationalized.
To prepare for this lecture, we suggest that you read section 5-5 and 5-6 of Oxtoby.
