Abstract for Lecture #12 - The Macroscopic Behavior of Real Gases and the Concept of Diffusion

In the first part of this lecture, we describe how real gases fail to follow the ideal gas law at high pressures. We will introduce the van der Waals equation of state and give a justification in terms of intermolecular forces between the atoms or molecules of the gas.

In the second part of this lecture, we will discuss the concept of diffusion and how it occurs on the molecular level.

To prepare for this lecture, we suggest that you read sections 4-6 and 4-7 of Oxtoby. You will also find relevant material in Gottfried in Chapter 7, pp. 177-178.
