Abstract for ExpLab #7 - Thermochemistry

In this lab you will study various aspects of thermochemistry with the aid of a calorimeter. Your first task will be to calibrate the calorimeter's temperature sensor, a thermistor. Next, you will measure the heat capacity of the calorimeter using the known heat input from a resistor. Then you will perform four experiments that will illustrate how calorimeters are used: (a) calibration of a thermometer, (b) calibration of a calorimeter, (c) measurement of the enthalpy of a phase transition and (d) the heat of solution of a salts, and (e) the heat of neutralization of a strong acid with a strong base.

To prepare for this lab, we suggest that you read the lab manual very carefully before coming to class. Also, read Oxtoby, Chapter 7, sections 2 and 5.
