Abstract for ExpLab#1 - Physical Measurements and Data Analysis

The objective of this lab is (a) to become proficient in using the analytical balance and measuring volumes of liquids and solids, and (b) to understand the concepts of accuracy and precision and how they are used to investigate the above measurement tools. You will store your data and do your calculations on a preformatted spreadsheet which is downloaded from the class Web site. You will use the basics of Excel spreadsheets which you learned in SimLab1. Specifically, you will perform calculations and display your results as tables. You will then use Excel to make some statistical calculations on a data set which consists of the measurements of the volume dispensed by a pipet for the entire class. You will summarize this data set by calculating its mean and standard deviation and plotting it as a histogram.

To prepare for this lab, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with Chapters 1 - 3 of your Excel text and that you read Appendix A (Scientific Notation and Experimental Error) of Oxtoby.
