HA&S 220A/CHID 270A Course Comments
Recommended Preparation
Familiarity with high school algebra and geometry as required for entrance to UW is an advantage. We try to use as little algebra and geometry as possible, introducing/reviewing what we need. Reasoning and critical thinking, on the other hand, will be fully exercised. Although this is a science course, it is intended for non-science majors, and some background in the history and/or philosophy of the Western world is assumed. This course is not intended for physical science majors.
Class Assignments and Grading
  • Readings from the texts Cosmology: A Cosmic Perspective and Science and the Human Prospect are both available on web. The HA&S 220A/CHID 270A Course Paks may be purchased at the UW Bookstore. Lecture notes will be available at the end of each week on this website.
  • Written homework consisting of short essay questions and assignments of a problem-solving nature will be assigned periodically and generally collected on Mondays. A term paper or project from a list of suggested topics will be due in the ninth week of the quarter.
  • A required 50-minute mid-term exam (Wednesday, Nov. 14) and a required 110-minute final exam (8:30-10:20 AM, Thursday, Dec. 13, PAA 114) will be written in class on sheets made available at that time. These closed-book exams are based on reading assignments, lectures and homework. One 8.5 x 11" sheet with notes of your choice on both sides is allowed for each exam (minimum 10-point type). There are no make-up exams.
  • The mid-term hour exam will comprise 20% of the course grade, the final exam 30%, the homework assignments 35%, and the paper/project 15%.
