| Micrograph of neonatal rat optic nerve. The nerve is dissected free, stained with antibody and fura2, and then mounted in a perfusion chamber on a microscope platform. In a standard experiment, the nerve is subjected to five minutes of normal physiological conditions then 55 additional minutes of simulated ischemic conditions. Images are collected every minute so that qualitative calcium concentrations can be measured and individual cells can be indentified and tracked. |
