Beyond the Picture Postcard - Old-timers, Transplants, and Tourists will be an audience-participatory public project that looks at stereotypes that locals and visitors have about each other in Shelburne Falls, MA. Interviews will be conducted with both local residents (old timers and transplants) and the tourist population. Photographs will be taken of individuals representing all three groups. The portraits will be altered digitally to make the individuals appear to be wrapped in plastic, like produce at the supermarket. These altered photos will be printed on one side of a postcard. The other side of the postcard will contain a quote from one of the interviews with the population who is represented by the photo. Racks of these postcards will be displayed near various tourist attractions and during town festivals, but they will not be for sale. Pedestrians will be invited to take a postcard and write down a perception they have about tourists and locals, and then leave their written remarks for others to read. During this project a public discussion will be held at a community center to discuss the affect of tourism on the quality of life in our region. Summer 2003 (pending funding).
Nuked Notes:Journey of a Free Radical This project is just beginning. I will be looking at the relationship between the nuclear industry and the medical industry.
Topics of general concern: pieces continue to emerge on the topics of endocrine disruptors or hormone mimickers and their affect on environmental health, an unromantic glance at motherhood, FEAR of violence and its affect on the general population, a new look at nuclear holocaust, and how to celebrate life and breathe in the face of all this suffering.
I AM LOOKING FOR COLLABORATORS!!!!!! I would love to meet with people (or even correspond with folks) who want to brainstorm ways to use art to raise consciousness about the state of the world, and have a great sense of humor.
