“California 1986-95”

While working in Long Beach, San Pedro (at Angel’s Gate Cultural Center) and Venice, CA many works on paper emerged as well as the installations of that time. One project, “Don’t Look at This” (1987) experimented with a slide/audio format and was performed at Beyond Baroque (Venice). Over 40 images flashed on the screen while an eerie sound track played in the back in the background (the audio track has sadly disappeared). The Nuke Postcard Series was inspired by a trip to France in 1987. Nuke plants seemed to have sprouted everywhere in the landscape, so postcards of landscape painting were culture jammed. Other topics that were demanding attention: rage regarding the Gulf War, consumerism, police brutality towards people of color, the environmental and economic crisis and the denial that most people seemed to be living with during that time.
