I’ll be giving a keynote talk this weekend–“Visual Poetry and the Poetics of Data Visualization”–at Dongguk University in Seoul, South Korea. The conference is called “Comparative Literature, World Literature, and the Digital Humanities,” and it is hosted by the Korean Society of East-West Comparative Literature (KEASTWEST).

Off to Los Angeles

I’m soon going to be in Los Angeles for three conferences in quick succession: conferences run by the Pacific Modern and Ancient Language Association, the Chinese/American Association for Poetry and Poetics, and the Modernist Studies Association. I’ll be chairing a panel on contemporary poetry on Friday, 11 November, at 10:20am; giving a talk on the Australian poets AJ Carruthers and Michael Dransfield on Saturday, 12 November, at 11:30am; giving another talk, on Anna Akhmatova and Robert Lowell, on Saturday, 19 November, at 3:30pm; and participating in a seminar on “The Poetics of Information Exchange” on Sunday, 20 November, at 10:30am, for which I’ve written an essay on Rudyard Kipling’s poem “Boots.” Should be a memorable ten days.

PAMLA Executive Board

I’ve just learned that I have been elected to the Executive Board of the Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Assocation (PAMLA). PAMLA is a regional association, more than a century old, that covers the West Coast, Alaska, and Hawaii; holds an annual conference with speakers from around the country and world; and publishes the journal Pacific Coast Philology. Congratulations to PAMLA and its Executive Director Craig Svonkin on a first-rate conference this past weekend in Portland, Oregon.

I’ll be participating tomorrow in the “Conversation with Marjorie Perloff” panel at the Pacific Modern and Ancient Language Association (PAMLA) annual conference in Riverside, California. It’s going to be in the Riverside Convention Center Room 4, 1:45-3:15pm. Come watch the conversational fireworks.

I’m off to Portland for the annual conference of the American Association of Australasian Literary Studies (AAALS). On Saturday morning 4/26/14 I’ll be giving a paper titled “The Shine and the Shadow: John Tranter Re-Views John Ashbery” on a panel with John Beer and Kaplan Harris on the legacy of the “New Australian Poetry” of the 1960s and 1970s. On Saturday 16 February I’m giving a paper titled “Bad Movies and Conceptual Poetry: Beyond the High/Low Divide.” It’s at 1:15pm, and it’s part of the Southwest/Texas Popular Culture Assocation annual conference in Albuquerque. Come hear me talk about such films as Kung Fu Panda, Alien vs. Predator, and Purple Rain!

It’s late notice, but if anybody’s in the neighborhood, I’m giving a paper titled “Now That’s Poetry: The Case of Vito Acconci’s ‘MOVE, REMOVAL (LINE OF EVIDENCE)'” today, 12 February 2013, at the University of California San Diego in the Michel de Certeau Room of the Literature building at 4:00 p.m. It’s part of a cool event called “Canonical Forms in Evolution” co-sponsored by the Music, Visual Arts, Chinese Studies, and Literature Departments at UCSD. My particular panel is called “Off Center” and it includes Jessica Pressman and Bob Perelman.

Learning from Las Vegas

I’m going to be attending this year’s Modernist Studies Association annual conference, which is in Las Vegas. The conference hotel is the Flamingo. And yes I will attend panels. Well, at least my own. If you’re in town & interested, I’ll be giving a paper titled “‘Some Old Dream of Kingship’: Christopher Brennan’s ‘The Wanderer'” (Aussie modernism ftw!) as part of the “Moving Spectacles: Modernism and Place” panel, 1:30-3:00 Saturday 20 October, in Red Rock V.

Speaking Soon in Germany

I’m looking forward to the conference “Memory, the United States, and Transnational Poetics” (29-30 June 2012) at Ruhr-University Bochum in Germany. I’ll be giving the first keynote address, bright and early at 9:30am, titled “Personalizing the Alphabet: The New York School and the New Australian Poetry.” There will be twenty five other people giving papers, including Michael Golston, Heinz Ickstadt, Sabine Sielke, Kornelia Freitag, and one of my own students, Nadine Maestas.
