{"id":191,"date":"2015-04-12T23:11:28","date_gmt":"2015-04-13T06:11:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/faculty.washington.edu\/bjbecker\/?p=191"},"modified":"2022-03-24T12:15:44","modified_gmt":"2022-03-24T19:15:44","slug":"empty-nest-no-longer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/faculty.washington.edu\/bjbecker\/2015\/04\/empty-nest-no-longer\/","title":{"rendered":"Empty nest no longer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a lonely winter with just me and Megan (<a title=\"Megan Twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BivalveFanatic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@BivalveFanatic<\/a>) holding down the fort, our lab is full of life again.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/faculty.washington.edu\/bjbecker\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Team-DNR.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-192\" src=\"http:\/\/faculty.washington.edu\/bjbecker\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Team-DNR-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Team DNR\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>This February, UWT alumna Michelle McCartha (<a title=\"McCartha Twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Geoduck_Pac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@Geoduck_Pac<\/a>) joined our group as a technician to take the lead on the Washington Department of Natural Resources <a title=\"Larval behavior and ocean acidification\" href=\"http:\/\/faculty.washington.edu\/bjbecker\/projects\/larval_behavior_and_oa\/\">Ocean Acidification project<\/a>. Michelle is no stranger to the Becker Lab, since she did her undergraduate capstone research on metal stress proteins in benthic infauna with us in 2013. It is her goal to do research on ocean acidification, so this project was a natural match for her. This month, undergraduate Brenda Smithhisler joined us as an independent research student working with Michelle. Brenda has been busy learning about acidification and qPCR, and is starting to work in the lab with Michelle. We have a team of four students in the class, plus Megan as the de-facto TA. They will work with us\u00a0on the <a title=\"Larval behavior and ocean acidification\" href=\"http:\/\/faculty.washington.edu\/bjbecker\/projects\/larval_behavior_and_oa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olympia Oyster Connectivity project<\/a>. They have had a crash course in invertebrate zoology, bivalve veligers, and Oly oyster restoration, and we have already started some preliminary experiments on shell growth at the <a title=\"PSRF Chew Facility\" href=\"http:\/\/www.restorationfund.org\/projects\/conservationaquaculture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PSRF Manchester Lab<\/a>. The students have been asked to each add one post to this page, so hopefully you will soon hear about their progress in their own words.<\/p>\n<p>I am so pleased to have a full lab again, and am looking forward to working with this promising bunch for the next few months.
