Looking for a great capstone with lots of field work plus some lab experience to make you competitive after graduation?

Looking for a summer job?

Wish you could do both at the same time?

We have multiple PAID positions available this summer for undergraduate researchers to work on a Washington Sea Grant funded research project to restore native Olympia oyster populations in Puget Sound.

The specifics

  • 10-20 hours per week from June – September, mostly concentrated in late June through mid-August.
  • Will have an expectation of availability over summer. Ideally, you would not be taking classes or have another job during the time you are working on the project. If you need to take classes or maintain a separate job, we will need to make a prior agreement about your commitment to this work.
  • Possibility of continuing work for credit in fall and beyond.

What I am looking for

  • Students who are excited to learn about marine biology and are passionate about marine conservation. This is the key requirement.
  • Preference will be given to:
    • Students already working in my lab (but no experience necessary).
    • Students who are interested in working on this project beyond this summer.
    • Students who would like to use this project to move them towards their career goals (ex. graduate school, agency work, education, or something related in some way).
    • UWT Environmental Science majors.
  • Students from traditionally under-represented groups in the sciences are encouraged to apply.
  • Students will be encouraged to apply for additional funding through scholarships (ex. Mary Gates, Mary Cline). Students will also be encouraged to present their work to an outside audience.

How to apply

By May 1, please email the following to bjbecker at uw dot edu:

  • A 1-page document that explains why you want this position.
  • Name of at least 1 UWT professor to serve as a reference.
  • Unofficial transcript

Hope you’ll join us!
