I am pleased to announce that, effective September 1, 2002, the Center for Streamside Studies and the Center for Urban Water Resources Management have merged to become the Center for Water and Watershed Studies. Professors Susan Bolton and Derek Booth will serve as co-directors of the newly merged Center.

I am also pleased to announce that while Professor Susan Bolton is on sabbatical leave during the upcoming academic year, Professor Clare Ryan will serve as acting co-director of the newly formed Center for Water and Watershed Studies. Professor Derek Booth will, of course, continue to serve as co-director with Professor Ryan.

The Center for Streamside Studies was created in 1987 as a result of the controversies concerning the management of forest, fish, wildlife, and water resources in the Pacific Northwest. The Center for Urban Water Resources Management was established in 1991 with a more explicit focus on the consequences of urban land development on the region's water resources. By joining together, we believe that the students, faculty, and our off-campus collaborators can improve the value of our research and educational outreach to the region as a whole. The mission of the Center is to provide the scientific information necessary for the resolution of management issues related to water, stream, fish, wildlife, and watershed resources across the forested, rural, urban and agricultural environments of the Pacific Northwest.
