Philosophy 322 History of Modern Philosophy Syllabus |
Instructor: Ann Baker
TA: Renee Conroy
Course Objective: The aim of this course is to survey a very important period in the history of philosophy. During this period (roughly 1630-1787) philosophical debate flourished. Studying the views of seven prominent philosophers provides the background necessary to understand many contemporary metaphysical and epistemological controversies. In the process of learning the main tenets of these philosophers, the students will learn to think more clearly, read more carefully, write more precisely, and discuss difficult abstract topics with more insight. Texts:

Course Requirements There will be two mid-term exams, a final exam, and various quizzes/homeworks. I assume that each student understands the requirements for academic integrity, and I trust that each student will conform to such requirements, but you should know that I take violations of that trust extremely seriously. If you have any doubts at all about what constitutes plagiarism, you should check the link below. UW Student Conduct Code
