Course Objective: The aim of this course is to survey a very important period in the history of philosophy. During this period (roughly 1630-1787) philosophical debate flourished. Studying the views of seven prominent philosophers provides the background necessary to understand many contemporary metaphysical and epistemological controversies. In the process of learning the main tenets of these philosophers, the students will learn to think more clearly, read more carefully, write more precisely, and discuss difficult abstract topics with more insight.

Texts:

  • Modern Philosophy, edited by Roger Ariew and Eric Watkins
