Medex Mac Page

MEDEX Northwest Physician Assistant Objectives Home: http://faculty.washington.edu/alexbert/MEDEX/

WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER

If you are having problems opening a web page, you may have to rewrite the address (this only happens on Macs)

Go ahead and click on the page you want to open.

If you get a “Not Found The requested resource does not exist on this server

Go to the address bar.

Change all \ to /:

http://faculty.washington.edu/alexbert/MEDEX/Winter\index.htm

To

http://faculty.washington.edu/alexbert/MEDEX/Winter/index.htm

Hit [RETURN] and you should be redirected to your page.

This seems to be the result of using multiple computers and HTML editors and seems to only affect Macs.

The web master doesn't understand Mac and is actually frightened by it.  If you are having problems and are using a Mac, you may get better info from another classmate with a Mac or from Elaine.

message from Elaine:

For sending documents from pc's to macs or vice versa, it helps to rename the document with less than 8 characters (alpha-numeric only), no spaces, and follow it with .doc

Instead of:          Elaine's To Do List

Try:                    EHToDo.doc     or     elaines.doc

Usually that will clear up most problems.  If you are still having problems, or know all this stuff and it still isn't working, try sending it to me with directions of where you want it to go and Ill try beating on it some.

Other stuff:

Mactopia- Microsoft’s Mac page: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/default.asp

Microsoft Word converter: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/download/office98/word_97982000_convert.asp With the Microsoft Word 97-98-2000 Import Converter, users of Microsoft Word 5.1 or Word 6.x for the Macintosh can open documents created in Word 97 for Windows. This converter will also make it possible for Word 5.1 or Word 6.x users to open documents created in Word 98 for the Macintosh.

Open a Microsoft Word document on a Macintosh using AppleWorks 6 word processing

  1. Launch AppleWorks.
  2. Insert the PC disk which contains the file you would like to translate. (This process works best when you start with a disk that has been formatted on your PC at home.)
  3. Use the File menu and choose Open...
  4. You may need to change the navigation pop-up menu in the upper left-hand corner so that your PC-formatted floppy disk appears as shown here.
  5. Set the correct translator:
    • Change the Document Type pop-up menu to Word Processing.
    • Change the File Format pop-up menu to match the file which is saved on the floppy disk (such as Word Win 97, 2000)
  6. (If you do not see your files on the floppy disk, cancel from this window and copy (drag) the PC files from the floppy into your Document folder on the server.)
  7. Select the document and click Open. The document has now been translated into AppleWorks.

Another option, email the PC file to yourself. Be sure to include the PC file as an attachment (also known as an enclosure).

Save an AppleWorks 6 word processing file so that you may open it later using Microsoft Word.

  1. Launch AppleWorks.
  2. Before you prepare to translate and save a document, be sure to save it normally (within AppleWorks) using the File menu and choosing Save.
  3. When you are ready to translate and save your file, use the File menu and choose Save As...
  4. Set the correct translator:
    • Change the File Format pop-up menu to match the software you plan to use at home (such as Word Win 97, 2000)
  5. Rename the file within the Name: box.
  6. Click Save (or press return). The document has now been translated and saved.
  7. It is recommended that you save within a separate folder on the server. You could name this folder "PC Files". Then, either...
    • Copy (drag) the translated file to a floppy disk, or
    • Email the translated file to yourself.
