WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER
FALL
Hello All Students, and the Behavioral Science Group.
The first assignment has been posted on the Behavioral Science E-Res
site. Please take a moment to look at it and print out the questions.
The movie can be rented at most Blockbuster's and Hollywood Video. Each
site also has a copy on hand that can be watched on location - and
sometimes checked out (each site has it's own rules). The due date for
the assignment is October 10th.
Happy Monday!
Elaine

Hi All
Please submit:
One progress note describing your observations of the patient and the
patient complaint. This is essentially the initial step in mental status
assessment.
Due date is next Friday: November 15th at 9:00am.
Elaine
I got ahead of myself with that last email. The
assignment I sent out is
for Behavioral Science and should be on the patient you videotaped with.
If you are videotaping next week your due date is one week later. Sorry
for the confusion.
Of course, if you feel the need to turn in random SOAP notes you should
feel free to do just that. I'm sure you have all kinds of free time right
now :)
Elaine
Hi All,
I have one copy of "Whose Life is it Anyway?" to loan out.
There are 5
local Blockbusters that have 3 copies total, Scarecrow has a couple of
copies as well. Plan ahead as this movie is out of print and sometimes
hard to find. Group viewings often work well.
Elaine
Forwarded from Gino:*********************
Please view the video Whose Life Is It Anyway. After viewing please write a
minium of three-page paper.
1. Use the four-topic paradigm of applied ethics to analyze this case. The
question Treatment Refusal in you
analysis include the following questions and provide the pros and cons
for
the issues:
A. Does a patient have the right to
decide whether life maintaining
medical treatment should be
discontinued,
knowing it would be fatal/
B. Should the patient's wishes be over
ruled by the attending
physician because of his perceived
responsibility for
the life of the patient while in his care
Also answer the following questions. (not part of the paradigm):
1. How can you, as a health-care provider, separate your personal feelings
on this issue from those of the patient so you can appropriately and
respectfully work with the patient values.
2. What aspects of this issue would be tough for you personally and what
would you need to do/consider to be able to care for a patient facing this
decision

Hi all,
It has been great to hear about your lives prior to MEDEX at the each one
teach one sessions. It adds depth of dimension to each of you as I hear
your stories.
Now, on to another learning moment for each of you. On Thursday December
5, 2002 in Behavioral Science, Dr. Tom McCormick will present on end of
Life issues and ethical concerns. Incorporated in this presentation are
End of Life decisions and Advanced Directives. To provide you with an
experiential and practical opportunity, your assignment is to bring to
class your Advanced Directive and a one page paper discussing the issues
that presented themselves to you as you completed your advanced directive.
Go to the Web Site http://www.va.gov//resdev/programs/hsrd/ylyc.htm
and
work through to completion the exercise. Use Your Life, Your Choices and
the Advanced Directive PDFs. Complete the advanced directive and bring it
to class with your one page paper and we will discuss the issues that
presented themselves to you during the final hour of class.
