  1. Some online resources
  1. Cicero

Bailey, D.R. Shackleton, Cicero (London 1971). [A biography based almost entirely on Cicero's correspondence, and useful if you are not overly familiar with that body of literature]

Bradley, K. Discovering the Roman Family. [final chap. has stuff on Cicero’s family]

Douglas, A.E. Cicero. Greece & Rome New Surveys in the Classics No. 2. Oxford 1968.

Gelzer, M., Cicero, ein biographischer Versuch (Wiesbaden 1969). [By far the most scholarly, authoritative and complete of the biographies listed here and not for those who want just the bare facts]

Habicht, C. Cicero the Politician. Baltimore 1990. [an attempt at rehabilitating Cicero, most interesting for its critical attitude toward previous German scholarship on Cicero. A very readable, concise introduction to Cicero.]

*MacKendrick, P.L.  The philosophical books of Cicero.  New York : St. Martin's Press, 1989.  [very good, thorough summary of the DRP on pp.  45-65]

Mitchell, T.N., Cicero: The Ascending Years (New Haven 1979). [Deals, as the title suggests, with Cicero up to his consulship and therefore not strictly relevant to the exact period we will be covering, but still one of the best studies to date.]

___________. Cicero. The Senior Statesman. New Haven 1991.

Nicholson, J. Cicero’s Return from Exile. New York 1992.

*Rawson, E., Cicero: A Portrait (Bristol 1975). [Straightforward, complete and very readable biography designed for the general reader...overall, the best of the lot.]

*Rawson, E., Intellectual life in the late Roman Republic.  London : Duckworth, 1985.  [good account of the cultural context in which the DRP was composed]

Rowland, R.J., "A Survey of Selected Ciceronian Bibliography (1965-1974)", CW 71 (1978) 289-327. [this is the most recent; others in the CW bibliographies bound in blue notebooks and on the reserve shelves.]

Stockton, D., Cicero: A Political Biography (Oxford 1971). [Between Gelzer and Rawson]

Wood, N., Cicero's Social and Political Thought: An Introduction (California 1988).
