Assignment for Mon. Nov. 7/Wed. Nov. 9
- Read
in Latin Pro Archia 1-6: we’ll
focus on 1-4 Monday, the remainder on Wednesday. Clearly, we will easily be able to translate all of
this in class together…and do some other exciting things with it as
well! So read carefully.
As mentioned in class, I’ve left a photocopy of
Cerutti’s text and commentary: use this in conjunction with your
reading. Read his introduction.
Ponderanda
Both of these for Monday, perhaps spilling over into Wednesday
- Before
we leave the Pro Roscio behind, I’d
like us to think about the ways the Pro Archia differs from – or is similar to –
that speech. Even in the
early chapters of the Pro Archia, you should note some interesting points of comparison and
contrast. How, in fact, does
the Pro Archia help us
better understand what’s going on the Pro Roscio comoedo?
- A
little philological sleuthing for you: come up with a good definition of humanitas (example of unacceptable answers: “I
think it means ‘humanity’.”) Various tools you might use
to do this: most obviously, the Oxford Latin Dictionary. But also: the Thesaurus
Linguae Latinae (if you don’t
know where this is in the seminar room, now would be a good time to find
it). And for the
stout-hearted Teutons among you, the Walde-Hofmann’s Lateinisches
Etymologisches Wörterbuch (also
in seminar room…a 2 volume blue beauty).
Papers
You should now start giving serious thought to your papers,
and part of your time each week should definitely be devoted to working on
these. Within the next few days, I’ll
post to our website a short description of what your paper entails…but start
thinking now (if you have not done so already) about topics.
