Assignment for Mon. Dec. 5/Wed. Dec. 7

• Finish the Pro Archia in Latin (25-32). If possible, I’d like us to translate this on Monday, after our recitation
• For Wednesday, read the Introduction and first chapter ("Epideixis, Textuality, and Self-Fashioning in the Pro Archia and In Pisonem") of John Dugan's Making a New Man: Ciceronian Self-Fashioning in the Rhetorical Works (Oxford 2005). Two photocopies of this have been placed on the reserve shelf.

Recitation

As previously indicated: on Monday, Dec. 5 we will perform the latter part of the Pro Archia. Please memorize and be prepared to recite (oh yes...and eventually translate) your assigned passage. I will serve as prompter, so don’t panic if you forget a line! Indeed, don’t panic generally. And fair warning: only Archias can have his text open during the ‘performance’...all Ciceros must listen to Cicero.

For Wednesday:

• Come ready to critique Dugan: what most impressed you, what least impressed you; how it compares to Fantham and/or Axer.
• I’d like to have a sort of freewheeling, wrap-up conversation first about the Pro Archia, and second about the three texts as a whole. Rather than set an agenda for this, let me invite you to contribute your own final thoughts (but please have them!).

Final Exam

On Wednesday I will distribute the ‘final exam’. This is a take-home exercise that you may complete and turn in at any time before Friday of exam week; there is a two hour limit. You will have to translate four (4) passages in all (roughly 15-20 lines each): one from each of the three texts we have read (I will give you 2 passages from each text, and you will pick 1 to do), and one sight passage (no choice there...but you’ll like it).

NB: Please note that this ‘final exam’ is entirely OPTIONAL for those who have already passed the PhD Latin exam
