Gelzer, M., Cicero, ein biographischer Versuch. Wiesbaden 1969. [By far the most scholarly, authoritative and complete of the biographies listed here and not for those who want just the bare facts]

Habicht, C. Cicero the Politician. Baltimore 1990. [an attempt at rehabilitating Cicero, most interesting for its critical attitude toward previous German scholarship on Cicero. A very readable, concise introduction to Cicero.]

Krostenko, Brian A. Cicero, Catullus, and the Language of Social Performance. Chicago 2001. [rev. BMCR 01.09.16]

MacKendrick, P. The Philosophical Books of Cicero. New York 1989. [A detailed outline of each of Cicero's philosophical works -- very useful as a resource, though not meant to be a critical study]

Mitchell, T.N., Cicero: The Ascending Years. New Haven 1979. [Deals, as the title suggests, with Cicero up to his consulship and therefore not strictly relevant to the exact period we will be covering, but still one of the best studies to date.]

Narducci, Emanuele (ed.) Interpretare Cicerone. Percorsi della critica contemporanea. Atti del II Symposium Ciceronianum Arpinas. Arpino 18 maggio 2001. Florence 2002.

Classen, C.J. Recht, Rhetorik, Politik: Untersuchungen zu Ciceros rhetorischer Strategie. Darmstadt 1985.

Corbett, E.P.J. Classical Rhetoric for the Modern Student 4th edition. Oxford 1998. [Emphasis on the 'modern' over the 'classical', hence this is in no way a study of classical rhetoric. However, it contains a concise and useful discussion of rhetorical theories and terms and, most importantly, illustrates them with examples from various speeches or essays in English. In short, Corbett does more than merely define the terms; he shows how they may be used and the effects they can achieve. Particularly helpful: pp. 20-9 ('Brief Explanation of Classical Rhetoric') and pp. 384-448 (on style, figures, diction etc.)]

Craig, C. Form as Argument in Cicero's Speeches. Scholars Press 1993.

D'Alton, J.F., Roman Literary Theory and Criticism. London 1931, 68-140 (Ch. 2, Aspects of the Problem of Style); 208-65 (Ch. 4, Cicero and the Atticists). [This book is a study more on the impact of rhetoric on literature than about oratory as an art in and of itself, but the Chapters indicated are very relevant. Chapter 2 in particular is a useful discussion of a sometimes difficult subject for moderns to appreciate...if you read nothing else in the book, read Chapter 2.]

Johnson, W.R. Luxuriance and Economy: Cicero and the Alien Style. Berkeley 1971. [This is a provocative essay whose intent is 1) to challenge contemporary intransigence with regard to our notions about the concept of 'style', and 2) to illustrate and partially explain the evolution of Cicero's prose. It merits reading if only because Johnson, as usual, forces us to reexamine the way we read and analyze a piece of literature.]

Kennedy, G. The Art of Rhetoric in the Roman World. Princeton 1972. pp 103-282. [Excellent, generalized examination of Cicero's rhetorical theories and practice and a very good introduction to the subject.]

Laurand, L., ƒtudes sur le style des discours de CicŽron, 3 vols. Amsterdam 1965. [Still the standard study of Cicero's diction and style and a useful reference work.]

Lausberg, H., Handbuch der Literarischen Rhetorik: Eine Grundlegung der Literaturwissenschaft, 2. vols. Munich 1960. [An authoritative and exhaustive compendium of rhetorical terms, practices and devices...all you would ever want to know and a good deal more. This has been translated as 'Handbook of Literary Rhetoric by Brill (1998), edd. D.E. Orton and R.D. Anderson]

[This is a selection of passages from Cicero, translated by Winterbottom, which illustrate Cicero's rhetorical theories. Most pertinent are the following: pp. 226-7, E. The Nature of Eloquence (de orat. 1.80-95); pp. 237-9, H. 'Attic' oratory (Or. 22-32); pp. 240-9, I. The three styles and the perfect orator (Or. 75-121); pp. 250-4, J.
