Assignment for Wednesday, January 7:

Please do these two things IN ORDER:

1) For starters here, look at the description of these Ôtwo page or one hourÕ papers IÕve posted to our webpage.

Having done that, write a Ôtwo page or one hour (whichever comes first)Õ paper in which you define what you believe ÔhistoryÕ and ÔmemoryÕ are and what they have in common (or not, according to your beliefs).

2) Read P. Nora, ÒBetween Memory and HistoryÓ in Representations, No. 26, Special Issue, Memory and Counter-Memory (Spring 1989), 7-24.

You may read this online (and print it, if you wish).  Click here or paste this address into your browser:

This is a translation of NoraÕs Introduction to his multi-volume Les Lieux de MŽmoire (Paris 1984 -   ), a project weÕll talk about.  As you read it, consider how NoraÕs views differ or are similar to those youÕve articulated in your short paper.
