1) For starters here, look at the description of these ‘two page or one hour’ papers I’ve posted to our webpage.

Having done that, write a ‘two page or one hour (whichever comes first)’ paper in which you define what you believe ‘history’ and ‘memory’ are and what they have in common (or not, according to your beliefs).

2) Read P. Nora, “Between Memory and History” in Representations, No. 26, Special Issue, Memory and Counter-Memory (Spring 1989), 7-24.

This is a translation of Nora’s Introduction to his multi-volume Les Lieux de Mémoire (Paris 1984 - ), a project we’ll talk about. As you read it, consider how Nora’s views differ or are similar to those you’ve articulated in your short paper.
