Assignment for Wednesday, January 21:

Read: Thucydides, Book 1.1-23 (Penguin pp. 35-49, Archaeology, Greek History through Persian War), Book 1.126-138 (Penguin pp. 108-117, Pausanias and Themistocles)

F. Yates, The Art of Memory, Chaps. 1 and 2 (if you didnÕt purchase this, remember that 2 photocopies of the relevant chapters are available on our reserve shelf in Denny 210 (not the one in Odegaard)

To think about:

á      Compare ThucydidesÕ ÔprefaceÕ to Hdt.: are their purposes the same?  how different Ð or similar Ð are their respective perceptions of their subject?

á      As you read, think about methodology Ð or more broadly, about ThucydidesÕ view of what history should do/achieve vs. that of Hdt.  Is Thuc. more explicit about this?

á      Why is Ôthe ArchaeologyÕ (Chaps. 2-19) there? What purpose does is serve? What does it tell you about Thuc.Õs view of memory?

á      Ditto Pausanias and Themistocles.  Digressions like this are comparatively (comparatively to Hdt., that is) rare.  Why does Thuc. compelled to include it?

ÔOne hr. or two-page paperÕ: Pick out something in your reading of Yates that helps you better understand something youÕve read in or some aspect of Hdt. or Thuc., and explain.  Conversely, if you think that nothing in Yates relates to what youÕve read of Hdt. or Thuc. thus far, write about that (and explain).
