Recommended Courses for Librarians
A list of essential LIS electives at the UW iSchool to take if you are planning on a career in librarianship - all of these courses represent core competencies of librarians. Most if not all of these courses represent skills and knowledge that all librarians need and use daily in their professional careers.
- LIS 501 - History and Foundations of Libraries and Librarianship
- LIS 521 - Principles of Information Services
- LIS 522 - Collection Development
- LIS 531 - Catalogs, Cataloging, and Classification
- LIS 536 - Indexing and Abstracting
- LIS 587 - Library Technology Systems (I include this course in my list because all librarians will be involved in the selection and maintenance of library technology systems - and the more you know about this before you get your first job, the happier you will be.)
This list is what I would consider a supplement the LIS core courses. It is an informal list that I have created, and does not reflect an official position of the iSchool.
