Recommended Courses for Librarians
A list of essential LIS electives at the UW iSchool to take if you are planning on a career in librarianship - all of these courses represent core competencies of librarians. Most if not all of these courses represent skills and knowledge that all librarians need and use daily in their professional careers.
3 ABSOLUTELY MUST TAKE, CORE LIBRARIAN COURSES:
- LIS 521 - Principles of Information Services (offered residential Spr 2010; offered online Aut 2010; offered residential Spr 2011**)
- LIS 522 - Collection Development (offered online Spr 2010; offered residential Aut 2010; offered online Spr 2011**)
- LIS 531 - Catalogs, Cataloging, and Classification (offered residential and online Aut 2010; offered online Win 2011**)
3 OTHER CRITICAL CORE LIBRARIAN COURSES:
- LIS 587 - Library Technology Systems (offered online Spr 2010; offered Win 2011 residential; offered Spr 2011 online** I include this course in my list because all librarians will be involved in the selection and maintenance of library technology systems - and the more you know about this before you get your first job, the happier you will be.)
- LIS 501 - History and Foundations of Libraries and Librarianship (offered online in Aut 2010; no residential offering in 2010-11**)
- LIS 536 - Indexing and Abstracting (offered online in Spr 2011; no residential offering in 2010-11**)
**Please remember that all course scheduling is subject to change, and plan accordingly.
This list is what I would consider a supplement the LIS core courses. It is an informal list that I have created, and does not reflect an official position of the iSchool.
