Music Education World Wide Web Resources
Resources That Provide Access To Various Web Sites
Music Education
Launch Site
This site's unique feature is links to a variety
of
lesson plans from teachers around the world.
Music Education Online
This resource is the best I've found that attempts
to comprehensively provide links to music education resources. Categories
include types of instruments and areas of teaching, music education
organizations and resources, online music magazines, and other various links.
Many entries have brief annotations. Good resource to begin exploring "what's
out there?"
Metacrawler
This Web browser searches multiple Web indexes simultaneously and allows some flexibility with what is searched.
Webcrawler
Webcrawler is a quick way to search the Web. It's precision is not keen, but it quickly gives you results to browse.
Alta Vista
Alta Vista has been said to be one of the largest, fastest, and most sophisticated search engines available for the Web. You can decide whether you want to do a simple or advanced search by clicking on the boxes at the top of the page. It m
ay take some time to learn the advanced searching. Good help screens.
Indexing Tools On The Web
Music Education Resource
Base (MERB/CMI) "MERB is a bibliographic database of more
than 27,000 resources in music and music education from 27 Canadian and
International journals and other sources covering the period 1956 through
the present. The journals are fully indexed by title, author, and
subject." Although searching is not as flexible or thorough as on ERIC
(MERB has no searchable abstracts for example), it includes journals such
as the Quarterly Journal of Teaching and Learning and the Instrumentalist
that are not indexed in ERIC.
Computer-Assisted Information
Retrieval Service System (CAIRSS)
"CAIRSS is a bibliographic database of music research literature in music
education, music psychology, music therapy, and music medicine. Citations
have been taken from 1,354 different journal titles; 18 of which are primary
journals, meaning that every article ever to appear is included." Although
searching is not as flexible or thorough as on ERIC or PsychINFO, it includes
journals such as the Quarterly and Journal of Music Teacher Education
which are not indexed in either ERIC or PsychoINFO. The
focus of the primary journals leans toward music therapy and psychology and
includes several journals not indexed by PsychINFO.
Music Education Search System
Includes an index to a small set of music education periodicals and the
Poland-Cady Abstract collection. The
Poland-Cady Abstract collection contains approximately 4,500 abstracts of
research in music prior to 1965. The collection was developed by
Professors William Poland and Henry Cady at The Ohio State University in
the late 1960s and early 1970s.
